The shaker boxes were designed as part of Furnishing Utopia, a workshop exploring shaker objects and culture hosted by the Hancock Shaker Village that was presented at NY Design Week 2016.
During my research at the Hancock Shaker Village, I noticed many examples of square forms intersecting circular forms. From turned table legs, to column bases to basket molds, this detail and transition was a theme that served to inspire the Shaker Boxes in this document. The prototypes created for the exhibition were realized in solid maple wood and plywood. They represent only a small sampling of the possible forms that the Shaker Boxes can take.
